IT EXPO – Buying phones that are "HD Ready"

One point out of  IT EXPO for all IP voice planning: New VoIP deployments need to deploy handsets which are HD capable, even if HD won’t be initially implemented.

Given the relative cost of building HD into a phone — which Polycom CTO Jeff Rodman says is as little as a dollar these days — selecting an affordable VoIP handset which is able to support G.722 shouldn’t be a problem.  Aastra, Avaya, Polycom, and snom are among the vendors either offering HD as a standard feature or have provided an easy way to upgrade to HD via firmware.

Other vendors are looking at supporting G.722 through firmware upgrades; ADTRAN has reportedly designed their phones to support G.722 and will roll out the codec upon sufficient customer demand.
