Cisco’s IME on TMC

A more in-depth discussion on how the Cisco (www.cisco.com) IME (Intercompany Media Engine) can be found over on TMCNet (www.tmcnet.com).

The IME offers an interesting way to bypass SBC-based federation schemes by directly negotiating a “virtual SIP trunk” between two companies to directly exchange SIP traffic for HD voice and video traffic.

Of course, the drawbacks are that you need to buy the IME and it currently only works with Cisco products, but Cisco has published a raft (well, 5) IETF standards to enable third-parties to build an IME in order to interface an IP PBX with the IME peer-to-peer connect scheme.

You can find the TMC piece on the IME at http://www.tmcnet.com/enews/e-newsletters/internet-telephony/20100412/81385-will-sip-federation-services-get-bypassed-with-ciscos.htm.
