Telecom Italia will launch mobile HD voice service in Italy starting in February, according to a press release this morning carried by Dow Jones and picked up by multiple (Italian) web sites.
Tim, (Telecom Italia Mobile) the mobile arm of Telecom Italia, will initially support AMR-WB on the Nokia N8 and Nokia C7, say various web site reports.
On a larger front, Telecom Italia joins France Telecom, SFR, Telekom Austria, and Megafon in offering HD voice in Europe, either directly or through subsidiaries.
Needless to say, the announcement ups the stakes as to what might come out of Mobile World Congress (MWC) in mid-February. HD Voice News will be looking for announcements on more handsets supporting AMR-WB, more carriers announcing support/expanded coverage for mobile HD voice service, and service provider interoperability. Expect a lot of handsets, some carrier announcements, and maybe one or two interop statements.
