The DECT Forum has issued CAT-iq 2.0 certificates for three different cordless phones and vendors. Gigaset Communications, Samsung Electronics and VTech Telecommunications all had a product that made it through the qualifications process.
CAT-iq handsets certified are the Gigaset C300H iq, Samsung SMT-W3510 and the VTech Advant 5000; yesterday VTech was claiming the Advant was the Very First handset to be certified for CAT-iq 2.0 compliance.
Under the CAT-iq 2.0 standard, handsets support cordless HD voice using G.722 delivered over DECT, multiple lines, three party conferencing, call transfer, and SMS text messaging. CAT-iq enables carriers to offer cordless IP phones with HD voice and SMS text messaging to their customers – two features which provide value above a stock VoIP offering.
Key phrase out of today’s press release “Many major European carriers are investing in the CAT-iq technology…” France Telecom and CableLabs are big backers of CAT-iq, and formal certification of CAT-iq devices in Europe should facilitate the appearance of them in North America.
The DECT Forum and service providers have big plans for CAT-iq, with future versions able to support goodies ranging from wireless stereo headsets for music and TV enjoyment to home security and monitoring services using DECT as a plug-and-play wireless network bridging the home and broadband environments.
