While Microsoft won’t take control of Skype (www.skype.com) for a while, it looks like the future owner’s disdain for open source is being embraced in advance. The Skype for Asterisk product will not be available for sale or activation after July 26, 2011, according to a notice on the Digium website.
The Skype for Asterisk product includes “proprietary software” from Skype to allow Asterisk to join the Skype network as a native client. Digium’s notice says Skype has decided not to renew the agreement, so sales and new activations will stop on July 26, 2011.
Existing users of Skype for Asterisk – however many there are – will be continued to be supported for a period of two years, as per the original Digium/Skype agreement back in 2008. Current users should be good until at least July 26, 2013, and “Skype may extend this at their discretion.”
(Well, more precisely, Microsoft may extend it at its discretion…)
