The Korea Times reports SK Telecom will start rolling out Voice over LTE (VoLTE) in September. SK Telecom says it has increased its subscriber target to 7 million by the end of the year, up from 6 million.
Company officials say VoLTE is a much better service than mobile VoIP (mVoIP), with call quality on a “different level.”
Samsung’s Galaxy S3 – expected to arrive in August — will be the first handset to support VoLTE on the SK Telecom network.
KT and LG Uplus plan to offer service in South Korea sometime in the second half of this year. SK Telecom’s rollout will start in Seoul and six other major cities, expanding to 23 by next year.
Currently, SK Telecom reports 3.4 million LTE subscribers and says they expect around 21 million customers by 2015.
