GSA LTE update: 105 commercial networks launched, 351 operators investing in LTE

The Global mobile Suppliers Association’s (GSA) October 1, 2012 report says 351 operators are investing in LTE, with 105 operators having launched commercial LTE networks in 48 countries. Another 194 network deployments are in progress.

GSA forecasts 159 networks will be commercially launched in 68 countries by the end of 2012, with 195 live networks turned up in 72 countries by the end of 2013.

A total of 299 operators are “firmly committed” to deploy commercial LTE networks in 93 countries.  Add another 52 operators in 11 more countries at the pre-commitment stage of technology trials, test or studies.

Over the past 12 months, 70 operators have launched commercial LTE services, a rapid ramp from 2011 when there were only a total of 47 operators running LTE.

Needless to say, LTE will pay a big role in HD voice deployments with the AMR-WB codec being the standard for Voice over LTE (VoLTE).  If you have VoLTE, in nearly all cases you have HD voice.
