Smart Communications offers mobile HD voice in Philippines

The largest mobile carrier in the Philippines is now offering HD voice, according to a report from the Philippine Star.

Smart Communications, the wireless subsidiary of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), is offering HD voice initially over its HSPA network in “select areas” of Makati City and Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.  Initial handsets supported are the Smart Netphone 701, Nokia E7, Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini and the Samsung Galaxy Ace, with AMR-WB being the necessary feature for service.

At the end of June, Smart had 50.9 million subscribers on its network at the end of June 2012.  The total estimated number of subscribers in the Philippines is estimated at around 90 million, with total population of the state at nearly 95 million.
